Bedroom

Kate Power with Sarah Rodigari

.
Bedroom
is a new work in development by South Australian visual artist Kate Power and is also a mentorship project between Kate and Sydney-based performance artist Sarah Rodigari, brokered and supported by Vitalstatistix and funded by Arts South Australia.

The mentorship brings together two queer artists who have engaged in a variety of programs and initiatives over the last few years with Vitalstatistix. Together they will explore text, dramaturgy and live performance skills in order to realise a new and ambitious project by Kate Power.

Bedroom, the work, began as a response to a painting of the same title by Vanessa Bell. In Bell’s painting, a woman sits naked on the edge of a bed. Her body language and lack of facial features suggest she is caught in a moment of private reflection.

Bedroom explores the space of internalising the pervasive domination and violence that women experience on a regular basis. Drawing on performed text, choreography and sculptural installation, Bedroom will seek to create a visceral and emotionally charged space that embodies responses to anger and grief. It extends Kate’s practice from performance for video into live terrain.

For the mentorship and creative development of this new work, Kate and Sarah have collaborated across zoom while COVID-19 public health shutdowns and border restrictions have been in place. This rescheduled residency will (fingers crossed, as it is still unknown if Sarah will be able to travel into South Australia) bring them together in the one physical space at Waterside. More on their process HERE.
