Creative Development supported by Vitalstatistix, Tarnanthi and the South Australian Museum
how do you feel now? is a process-driven exploration and response by Wiradyuri conceptual artist Amala Groom and Wajarri Yamatji/Dutch/English trans-disciplinary creative Nicole Monks.
Throughout the project the artists each seek to document, re-enliven and reflect upon the deeply profound experience of accessing their ancestral cultural materials held in Australian institutional collections, including the South Australian Museum—which holds the largest collection of Aboriginal cultural and ethnographic materials in the world—and in response, revive and inspire the creation of new cultural objects and/or contemporary works of art, documented by Walbanga Yuin interdisciplinary artist John A Douglas.
This residency supports the development of new work by each artist with their respective communities—Wiradyuri Country in NSW for Amala Groom and Yamatji Wajarri in WA for Nicole Monks—working with their own Elders, communities and extended family networks towards future presentation outcomes.
The artists acknowledge Kaurna sovereignty was never ceded. We pay our respect to the Kaurna community; their Ancestors, their Elders, their Kin and their Country who hold Lore, Language, Land and Custom. We are all in this together.
